Pelicans mens 1st XI 5-1 Cambridge University 2nd XI

Pelicans returned to home turf on Saturday and ran out compressive winners against the students from Cambridge University. The visitors started well and blazed a shot over the bar but it didn’t take long for the home side to settle and take the lead with another Sam Phillips short corner special, his drag flicked flying past the goalkeeper. The lead didn’t last long however as the visitors equalised. The rest of the half was all Pelicans though, they retook the when determination from Toby Phillips saw him rob the ball high up the pitch, find his brother Sam whose shot was heading in before the returning Jack Major did what all good strikers do and made sure it crossed the line. 

A third arrived soon afterwards and again it was determination from Eddie Van Aalst who profited from an error in the students back line before finding space and slotting home. 

Before half time there was still time for a 4th, this was a goal made and scored by the Major’s. Sam took a quick sideline hit down the line for Jack who picked the pass up brilliantly, weaved in and out of three defenders and slotted home. 

The second half saw Pelicans in complete control of the game, to a man everyone was at the top of their game and no more so than the two defensive midfielders of Christoffels and the outstanding Phoenix Sherry who continues to flourish in his new role. They protected the back line of Major, Southby, Iain Page & Chris Page who all proved to be influential going forward as well as defensively.  Bower in goal was rarely tested and enjoyed what was going on in front of him. A fifth and final goal came the way of the home side and it was Phillips again who received a quick free hit from Harry Sampson before he unleashed an unstoppable reverse stick shot into the roof of the net. Further chances fell the way of Toby Phillips,Miles Doncaster and Ian Simmons but an emphatic win sees Pelicans move up to third and travel to Kettering next weekend.
